TAKE A RIDE ON THE WILD SIDE OF THE BEAUTIFUL AMATHOLE MOUNTAINS AND HOGSBACK FORESTS
We practice natural horsemanship and believe in forming trusting partnerships with our friendly, well-trained and easy to ride horses. We offer a range of tailor made, memorable and alternate horse rides for both the experienced and first-time rider. Choose an easy or more challenging trail through our beautiful countryside, forests, mountains or the quaint village of Hogsback. Enjoy a ride during the day, at sunrise, sunset or under the full moon. Our rides may incorporate a picnic on the mountain, a swim with the horses in a local dam or breakfast/lunch at one of our fine restaurants in the village of Hogsback – every ride is personalized to indulge you.

Day Horse Trail Rates

Prices exclude meals or any other extras.Return transfers from Hogsback village are available at R50 per trip.
Overnight Horse TrailsOvernight trails for experienced riders only. Trails per request for groups of 2 – 4 persons. Prices include meals & accommodation (Does not include beverages). Please consider booking in at Terra-Khaya for a couple of extra days so we may choose the best weather during that period to do our overnight trails.
Camping Under the Stars Overnight Trail - R1150 per person (Approx 30km)
After a hearty lunch we saddle up and head out through the forests to a secluded dam where we swim and bask in the sun with the horses. Then it's up onto the Menziesberg to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Amathole escarpment and valleys. Enroute to the campsite, we will pop in at the secret waterfall for sunset and sundowners. As dusks approaches we will make our way to our overnight spot to set up camp and enjoy a delicious fire charred dinner and a few drinks, whilst chilling under the stars.
After a good nights sleep, its coffee and breakfast from the campfire before a gentle ride back to Terra Khaya through the hills and forests, bringing this spectacular adventure to a comfortable end.
Overnight Trail to Elundini Backpackers - R1250 per person (Approx 45km)
At noon, we saddle-up and head out on the horses, through the forests for a swim in the dam and then over the escarpment, down into the valley below the Hogsback mountains. Elundini Backpackers is perfectly situated for spectacular sunsets, in the heart of a Xhosa village with breathtaking views of the Amathole Mountains. Lieve, the host, always cooks up a delicious dinner in her family's homely backpackers.
After a good nights sleep and coffee, we take a short walk through the village and up the hill to enjoy a spectacular 360’ view of the Amathole basin. Then we enjoy Elundini's legendary hearty "breakfast-in-a-cup" with vetkoek before we head up into the mountains to the secret waterfall and then back to Terra Khaya.
Luxury Overnight Trail to Grasslands Farm - R1450 per person (Approx 30km)
After lunch we head off on the steeds, up to Tor Doon lookout to enjoy the panoramic views of the Hogsback mountains, escarpment and valleys. We then head through the forests and wetlands to the beautiful Grasslands Farm, where comfort beds, delicious farm style dinners and ice cold beers await. Our hosts, Jen & Loch have created and share a beautiful warm and relaxing environment in their home.
The next morning Jen warmly prepares a delicious farm breakfast and coffee before showing us around the farm and introducing us to her wonderful four-legged horse family. Then it's time to saddle up and head out with Jen as she joins us for part of the journey back to Terra-Khaya.

Day 2After a good nights sleep, it's coffee and breakfast from the campfire before we set off with our horses through the mountains down to a local Xhosa village in the valley where we can look forward to an authentic African lunch at Elundini Backpackers. After lunch we head through villages and valleys until we reach the home of Mama Mayakeso in Aukland Village. We are welcomed in true African style with music, festivities and food. This is an amazing opportunity to involve yourself in the local indigenous culture and fellowship before it's off to bed, to relax those weary bones and muscles. Day 3
After sharing a hearty breakfast with the Mayakeso family, we saddle up and start the 900m assent into the Hogsback mountains. This is the most challenging day of the trail, as we work our way up mountain paths and forestry roads, through rivers and over hills to the beautiful Grasslands Farm, where Jen & Loch, welcome us with comfortable beds, warm showers, a delicious farm style dinner and ice cold beers, in their beautiful warm and relaxing farm home.
Day 4The next morning Jen warmly prepares a delicious farm breakfast and coffee before showing us around the farm and introducing us to her wonderful four-legged horse family. Then it's time to saddle up and head out with Jen as she joins us for part of the journey back to Terra-Khaya – a truly unforgettable experience, guaranteed!
