Carrie's BioCarrie Bio PicI first discovered natural building in 2011 whilst volunteering at bergendal permaculture community near Ladismith, where I helped to build the classroom walls out of cob. As a child I used to absolutely love shaping and moulding clay into various objects and so I was truly thrilled upon re-discovering the wonders of mud-building and the possibilities that it presented. After browsing various natural building blogs I came across many cob ovens and thought to myself what a fantastic project to try and so in August later that year I built my very first cob oven and they truly are a magical mix of all of the elements, earth, water, fire and air! Since then countless more ovens built and adventures had. In 2016 I was part of a groundbreaking project in Delft building an Early Childhood Development Center out of a variety of natural building methods including rammed earth tyre walls, cob and compressed earth bricks as well glass bottle and Eco-brick walls, decorative designs and sculptural finishes. I find working with natural building materials very 'grounding' and would recommend it to everyone, get dirty!
